There are two types of Cocktail Shakers. The first is the traditional cocktail shaker which has a built-in strainer. The second type of Cocktail Shaker is called a Boston Shaker which requires a Hawthorne strainer.
The Cocktail Shaker is used to shake a mixed drink over ice. This not only mixes the drink thoroughly but also thoroughly chills the drink very rapidly.
